New Sounds New Styles Magazine

New Sounds New Styles was a monthly music, art and fashion magazine first published in the UK in July 1981, and covering the New Romantics movement and clubbing scene.

It lasted 13 issues and ended July 1982.

In the latter days of 1980 the Production Editor of Smash Hits, Kasper De Graaf, pitched an idea to EMAP, the publisher of Smash Hits, for a new magazine focusing on the music and style culture that was emerging in the Pubs and Clubs across the country.

EMAP agreed and in March 1981 they published a 64-page pilot issue titled New Sounds New Styles. This new magazine came hard on the heels of The Face and i-D, two independently financed path finders in this yet unfamiliar post-teen market for magazines that discuss more than music alone. New Sounds New Styles was designed to test the potential of the New Romantics fashion and clubbing scene in the very spring when it was taking off with explosive force.

Although shortlived New Sounds New Style Magazine proved to be an exciting vechicle for Garrett's experimental graphic style. Allowed a free hand, Garrett introduced a new format for the magazine, using witty graphic puns and devices for the young

style-conscious market.

EMAP eventually closed the magazine due to what they felt was poor sales of about 50,000 per month (compaired to 500,000 copies each 2 weeks for Smash Hits).  EMAP eventually went for the mid-teen girls market with the successful Just Seventeen Magazine.

Thank you to Kasper De Graaf for his help in compiling this page and for providing some of the issues.
